Mandatory Advising

As a student in the College of Engineering, you will have a “College Advising Hold” placed on your student account by the college every semester. This hold restricts you from registering for your next semester’s courses until removed.

To remove your advising hold, you must complete a series of steps depending on your current academic standing in the Computer Science/Data Science program. We refer to this as “Mandatory Advising”.

The advising flowchart below details the steps you must take to remove your advising hold based on your current academic standing. Students requiring Mandatory Advising fall into one of the following categories:

  • Students new to the CS/DS program (e.g. first-semester freshmen, transfers, intercollege transfers (ICTs), change of majors within the COE, readmits)
  • Students on Term Notice or Academic Notice (i.e. GPA < 2.0)
  • Students on track to graduate in the next semester (i.e Spring graduates in the Fall semester before)
  • Continuing CS/DS students in good academic standing (i.e. GPA > 2.0)

Your first step is ALWAYS to submit the CS/DS Advising Form. This form is intended to help students understand their degree requirements and put together a clear course plan ahead of their registration. Forms completed incorrectly will result in a delay in hold removal.

Once your form is submitted, review your academic standing to determine if you are ALSO required to meet with your departmental advisor via a 1:1 appointment.

Each advisor manages their appointment schedules a little differently. If you require an appointment, please review their mandatory advising email sent out during Week 5 of the semester with the subject line “Mandatory Advising Guidelines”.

To register on time, you MUST complete the mandatory advising steps BEFORE your time ticket opens. To view your specific time ticket, you can visit the “Prepare for Registration” tab within XE registration starting on October 20.

General registration periods vary by class standing with Seniors registering first followed by Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshmen.

NOTE: If you are graduating in the current semester, you are NOT required to complete mandatory advising.
