Baoxin Li named department head of UIC Engineering’s Computer Science Department

UIC College of Engineering Dean Lola Eniola-Adefeso announced that following a national search, Baoxin Li has been named department head of the UIC College of Engineering’s Department of Computer Science, effective Aug. 16.

Li earned a PhD in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Maryland,  and his MS and BS degrees in electrical engineering and information science from the University of Science and Technology of China.

Li is a computer science and engineering professor at Arizona State University, where he also serves as the associate director for academic and student affairs for the School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence at ASU. He is the co-director of the ASU-Mayo Clinic Center for Innovative Imaging. Li’s research focuses on visual computing and machine learning, emphasizing their application to human-centered computing.

Li will take over as department head from the current head, Professor Robert Sloan. Sloan served as interim department head starting in 2007 and was named permanent head of the computer science department in 2009. Student enrollment grew exponentially during his tenure, the faculty expanded, research funding increased substantially, and our new Computer, Design, Research, and Learning Center was completed.
