New Student Advising and Registration
New Student Advising and Registration
Welcome Fall 2024 students!
The Computer Science Advising Team is so excited to meet you over this Summer as you prepare for your first semester in the College of Engineering. As an undergraduate student in the Computer Science department, you are assigned both a College of Engineering AND a Computer Science advisor. To ease your transition to UIC, we have compiled important information and resources for you to reference regarding advising, registration, and more!
For more information on the College of Engineering feel free to visit their website at engineering.uic.edu/undergraduate/.
NOTE: If you are a recently readmitted student, you are not required to register for orientation. Please contact cs_advisors@uic.edu for course recommendations and registration assistance.
Preparing for Your Advising Registration Session
Preparing for Your Advising Registration Session
- All incoming First Year and Transfer Undergraduate students are required to complete an asynchronous online orientation and placement exams, if applicable.
- Access to placement exams can be found on the UIC Connect Tab in your my.uic portal.
- Students who complete the asynchronous online orientation and any required placement exams will be sent information to register for an in-person advising registration session.
- Fall 2024 in-person advising registration session dates are available on a first-come first-serve basis beginning in June. Please schedule accordingly.
- NOTE: It is mandatory for engineering students to sign up for an Advising Registration Session as this is how advisors are notified of the students seeking to enroll for Fall 2024.
- Once registered for a session, review your uAchieve Degree Audit Report found in your my.uic student portal to check how your AP/IB, A-Level or Transfer Credits are applicable to your degree.
- Advisors will use whatever information is posted on your uAchieve Degree Audit to provide course recommendations.
- If credits are not present at the time of advisor course recommendations, they will not be accounted for in your initial recommendation.
- You will have an opportunity to discuss transfer credits that may not be appearing on your degree with an advisor during your advising registration session.
- Students should request to have official final transcripts or AP scorecards sent to the Office of Admissions as soon as they become available to ensure any applicable transfer credit is posted ahead of the semester start.
Week Before Scheduled Advising Session
- Students can expect to be contacted by a Computer Science advisor via their UIC email with course recommendations and registration instructions about five days prior to their scheduled registration session.
- Students should register BEFORE attending their in-person session.
- Students are allowed to change their schedules the day of advising if needed. This will allow the advisors time to review your schedule and provide any recommended changes. Some classes may also need departmental approval which can delay your registration. More information about required registration approvals will be discussed during the session.
Day of Advising Registration Session
- Advising Registration Sessions will run from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
- Make sure to come prepared with:
- 2-Factor Authentication Activated
- A laptop/tablet
- Snacks/Lunch
- Water
- Each session will consist of a guided group presentation regarding departmental/college policies, student resources, and registration information along with the opportunity to receive one-on-one registration and course schedule assistance from a Computer Science advisor.
- Keep in mind that advisors and staff will be available to help troubleshoot any registration error messages.
After Your Advising Registration Session
- Before seeking out assistance from an advisor after your session, please make sure to review the resources shared with you in your course recommendation email and during the session to see if you can get an answer to your question quicker and more easily that way.
- If your question cannot be answered by those resources already shared with you, reach out to the CS Advising Team via email at cs_advisors@uic.edu. We will work to respond to your email within 3-5 business days.
- Throughout the Summer, the CS Advisors will offer Virtual Drop-In Advising opportunities for new students who have attended their advising registration session but still have lingering questions best discussed one-on-one. This drop-in advising schedule can be found in a student’s initial course recommendation email.
Advising in the Department of Computer Science
Our role as your CS Advisor is aimed to support you throughout your academic journey here at UIC through offering support, guidance, and recommendations for each students’ needs.
Your departmental advisor (Computer Science, Data Science, and Computer Science + Design) is assigned at the beginning of your first semester. In addition, you will be assigned an Academic Resource Center (ARC) advisor through the College of Engineering which we refer to as your COE college advisor. Both advisors are here to provide you with assistance. However, your departmental advisor will be focused more on course planning, mandatory advising, etc. whereas your COE college advisor will process many of your COE forms, certify your graduation, etc.
Registration Resources
Registration Resources
The deadline to finalize your Fall 2024 course schedule is September 6, 2024.
- Once a Computer Science Advisor has contacted you via email with a recommended course schedule, you are able to proceed to register for your Fall courses. There are two ways to register for classes:
- All incoming undergraduate students will be advised to register for ENGR 100 which requires students to search by the Course Registration Number (CRN).
- When registering, you must meet prerequisites and corequisites for classes. Otherwise, you risk being dropped from the course with penalties.
- If you are advised to consider adding a General Education (GEN ED) course to your schedule, refer to your uAchieve Degree Audit report to identify unfulfilled requirements and make your selection from this list.
Evaluation of Transfer Credits
- Engineering courses you did not earn transfer credit for, will appear as Unknown, Engr Syl Req’d, or Syl Req’d-Engr on your uAchieve Degree Audit Report. If you believe these should be considered for credit to fulfill a degree requirement, we require that you submit a Transfer Articulation Petition. This request should be accompanied by a course syllabus outlining topics covered weekly throughout the term. Once the Petition is submitted, please expect a response within a week.
- NOTE: The CS Advising Team DOES NOT evaluate any transfer credits. This is done directly by the College of Engineering. For updates on your evaluation, you will need to contact them at uic-engr@uic.edu.
- Non-Engineering classes such as Math, Science, and Humanities courses that are articulated as Unknown, LAS, Syl Req’d or LAS Trfr can be evaluated by submitting the course syllabus to syllabus@uic.edu. You should include your name, UIN, and course information to have it evaluated by the corresponding department. Evaluation of these courses may take 3-4 weeks.
Students with Advanced Placement Program (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or A-Level credit can reference the course catalog for the list of scores accepted by UIC.
Contacting a Computer Science Advisor
- Students will not be assigned a Computer Science Advisor until the beginning of the school year.
- Computer Science advisors do not have the capacity to hold individual appointments with incoming students over the Summer.
- Students who have questions/ need support can:
- Email the CS Advising Team at cs_advisors@uic.edu
- Visit Drop-In Advising for new students after you have attended your advising registration session
